Ping

Measure Ping for any Address.

Ping

Ping any web server and measure the latency. The latency is the total time elapsed for the Client and the Server to send and receive data from each other. Simply type in your Address and click on the button.

What ping measures and how to read the result

Ping measures how long a small packet takes to travel from our server to a host and back. This round-trip time, called latency, is shown in milliseconds (ms). Lower is better.

It is one of the quickest ways to see whether a host is reachable and how responsive its network is.

How to use it

  1. Enter a domain name or IP address, for example example.com or 8.8.8.8.
  2. Start the test.
  3. Check the response time. If the host does not reply, you will see an error.

Example

A ping of 20 ms means a request and its answer took about a fiftieth of a second in total. Values under 50 ms feel instant; several hundred milliseconds usually point to a long distance or a congested route.

Good to know

  • Latency depends on physical distance: a server on another continent always has a higher ping than one in your own country.
  • Many servers and firewalls block ping on purpose. No reply does not always mean the site is down, so confirm with the Website Status Checker.
  • The result shows latency from our server, not from your computer. To test your own connection, run ping example.com in your terminal.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good ping?

For websites, anything under about 100 ms is fine. For online gaming and video calls, under 50 ms is ideal.

Is ping the same as download speed?

No. Ping measures delay, not bandwidth. A connection can download quickly and still have high latency, or the other way round.
