How to create a strong password

A strong password is long, random and used for only one account. The Password Generator creates random passwords with the length and character types you choose, which is far safer than inventing one yourself.

How to use it

1. Choose a length; 16 characters or more is a good default.
2. Select the character types: uppercase, lowercase, numbers and symbols.
3. Generate the password and save it in a password manager.

Example

Each extra character multiplies the number of possible passwords by the size of the character set, so a 16-character password is vastly harder to guess than an 8-character one.

Good to know

• Length matters more than complexity. A long password beats a short one full of symbols.
• Never reuse a password. When one site is breached, attackers try the same login everywhere else.
• Turn on two-factor authentication for important accounts such as email and banking.
