How to check a domain's DNS records
DNS turns a domain name into the addresses and settings that computers use. The DNS Lookup tool queries a domain's public records so you can see exactly what the rest of the internet sees.
How to use it
- Enter a domain name without http://, for example example.com.
- Run the lookup.
- Review the records that come back.
Example
After moving your site to new hosting, check the A record. If it still shows the old server's IP address, the change was not saved at your DNS provider or has not spread yet.
Good to know
- A = the IPv4 address of the domain. AAAA = the IPv6 address. CNAME = an alias that points to another name.
- MX = the mail servers. NS = the name servers responsible for the domain. TXT = text data used for SPF, DKIM, DMARC and site verification.
- If a record is missing here, it is missing for everyone, so fix it at your DNS provider rather than on your computer.
Frequently asked questions
How long do DNS changes take?
It depends on the record's TTL (time to live). Many changes appear within minutes to a few hours, but some resolvers keep old values for up to 24 to 48 hours.
Why do I see different results on my computer?
Your computer or router may have cached an older answer. Flushing your DNS cache or restarting the router usually fixes it.
