How to find a domain's mail servers
MX (mail exchanger) records tell other mail servers where to deliver email for a domain. If they are missing or wrong, email sent to that domain bounces or gets lost.
How to use it
- Enter the domain part of the email address: for name@example.com, enter example.com.
- Run the lookup.
- Check the mail servers listed and their priority numbers.
Example
A domain using Google Workspace shows MX records pointing to Google's servers, while one using Microsoft 365 points to a host ending in mail.protection.outlook.com.
Good to know
- The lower the priority number, the more preferred the server. Servers with higher numbers act as backups.
- When you switch email providers, delete the old provider's MX records, otherwise some messages may still go to the old service.
- Spam protection depends mostly on SPF, DKIM and DMARC, which are TXT records. Check them with the DNS Lookup tool.
Frequently asked questions
I changed my MX records but email still goes to the old provider. Why?
Wait for the old records' TTL to expire, and make sure the old records were removed rather than left next to the new ones.
Can a domain work without MX records?
The website can, but email delivery will usually fail. Any domain that receives email needs MX records.
