How to Read HTTP Status Codes

Understand the HTTP status codes that matter most when debugging websites and SEO issues.

2xx means success

A 200 response normally means the requested page was delivered successfully.

3xx means redirection

301 is commonly used for permanent redirects while 302 and 307 indicate temporary behavior. Redirect chains should be kept short.

4xx means a request problem

404 means the resource was not found. 410 can explicitly signal that a resource is gone.

5xx means a server problem

Repeated 5xx responses can affect users and crawlers, so investigate application logs and hosting health quickly.
